Charlotte Urban Area Security Initiative

The Charlotte UASI is the single DHS identified UASI region within the State. The main focus of the UASI program is to enhance regional coordination for the prevention, response to and mitigation of terrorist events. The program focuses on high threat/high density areas at highest risk for a terrorist incident based on incident reporting and Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources within the area.

The Charlotte UASI aligns with DPR 7 and links the core City and County to eight counties in North Carolina (Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Stanly and Union) and two counties in South Carolina (Lancaster & York) to counter terrorist threats. This official recognition of this densely populated area at high risk for possible terrorist events supports the focus the State places on the protection of its population.

The City of Charlotte Fire Department and the Urban Area Working Group (UAWG) coordinate the Charlotte UASI program. The Charlotte UAWG is comprised of one Emergency Management Director from each of the core counties due to their close relationships with local fire, law enforcement, Emergency Medical Service and non-governmental organizations.
